A primary example cited is Project Mariner, a research prototype functioning as a Chrome-based AI agent. While its current reach is limited, Project Mariner is designed to handle complex workflows on behalf of the user. Google has signaled that we should expect a broader rollout of Google-Agent in the coming weeks.
Google-Agent is Not Like Other User Agents
The fundamental shift here is that Google-Agent is user-triggered. Unlike traditional crawlers like Googlebot, which scan the web in the background to index pages for search results, Google-Agent only appears when a real person specifically asks an AI to perform an action on your site.
